What Happened to Molly Penfold?
Molly Penfold, 23, was injured while playing in the Hallyburton Johnstone Shield tournament.
She tore a part of her knee called the meniscus, which required surgery. Now, she needs about 12 weeks to heal before she can play again.
What Did the Coach Say?
New Zealand’s head coach, Ben Sawyer, feels really horrible for Molly. He said, “We are all very sad for Molly.
She was playing really well, and it is not nice for her season to end this way.” However, he also shared some good news! She will be prepared to train in the winter if she recovers appropriately.
How Good is Molly Penfold?
Molly is a great bowler! She has taken nine wickets in 14 One Day International (ODI) matches. She has claimed seven wickets in ten T20 matches.
One of her best performances was against Australia last December when she took four wickets for 42 runs. That was her career-best performance!
More Players Missing from the Team
Molly Penfold is not the only player missing from the Team. Another great player, Sophie Devine, will also not play against Sri Lanka.
She is taking a break from cricket, and it has still not been decided if she will play against Australia.
Upcoming New Zealand Games
Even though New Zealand has lost some players, they still have important matches coming up:
- Three ODIs and three T20Is against Sri Lanka (Next month)
- Three Twenty20 Internationals against Australia (following the Sri Lanka games)
Changes in the Sri Lanka Team
Sri Lanka’s Team is also making some adjustments. Chamari Athapaththu, one of their top players, will leave another competition early to play against New Zealand.
However, Amelia Kerr, a New Zealand player, will stay in India and will not play in the Sri Lanka series.
Final Thoughts!
It is always sad when a player gets injured and cannot play. New Zealand will miss Molly Penfold, but the Team will keep fighting in their contests. We hope Molly recovers quickly and comes back even stronger!
