Marriage Procedure In Tamil Nadu
Marriage can be performed in two ways. One is through traditional marriage in which all the traditions of the marriage are followed. The other way is to do court marriage. The traditional marriage is lengthy as compared to court marriage. Special Marriage Act governs Court marriages. It does not create any bar on marriage on the basis of caste, religion, etc.

- Blessing of the Thali: The groom presents a saree as a girst to his bride. It symbolizes the acceptance of the groom’s family.
- Saptapadi: The couple circles the sacred fire seven times with their hands clasped.
Marriage Procedure in Tamil Nadu
- The couple should appoint an advocate for the court marriage.
- The couple should visit the marriage registrar’s office in the district where both or any of the couple resides.
- The couple needs to fill out the application form and submit the necessary documents with the application form.
- The authorities will verify the documents submitted by the parties. An interview with the couple and the witnesses can be requested in this verification process.
- After the verification of documents, the marriage registrar’s officer will post the notice of the proposed marriage. This post will be there for 30 days. The purpose of the publication is to allow any objections to the proposed marriage.
If no objection has been filed then in such a case after the expiry of the 30-day notice period, a date will be fixed for the scheduled marriage.
On the scheduled date, the couple along with witnesses will visit the office of the marriage registrar. After the solemnization of marriage, the marriage certificate will be issued in some time.
Post marriage functions
There are certain things that need to be done post-marriage solemnization. These are:
- The couple needs to collect the marriage certificate. It is the legal proof of marriage.
- After this, with the help of a marriage certificate, you can amend various documents like government documents, bank accounts, passports, and insurance policies.
- If the couple wants, they can perform the traditional functions after the solemnization of the court marriage. They can enjoy the traditional functions as well.
Marriage Registration Procedure in Tamil Nadu
The registration of marriage in Tamil Nadu can be done by two procedures. One is through online mode and offline mode.
The online mode is that you first need to sign up on the online marriage registration portal of Tamil Nadu. After this, you need to select the district. Enter the husband’s information and select the registration of the marriage certificate. Complete the form and choose the time for an appointment. After this, click on the submit button after checking all the credentials. You will receive a temporary number. That number needs to be put on the acknowledgement slip. Take the printout of that slip. At the appointed time, the authorities will issue your marriage certificate.
The offline mode is that you first need to collect the application form from the registrar’s office. After this, you need to submit that form with all the necessary documents. The registrar officer will issue a public notice of 30 days to allow the people to file an objection. If any objections have been filed, the authorities will investigate it within this time. Once the officer is satisfied that all the requirements have been fulfilled, then the marriage certificate which both the parties and the three witnesses have signed will be entered. After this, the marriage certificate will be provided to the couple.
