Suryakumar to Lead in Absence of Hardik from Mumbai Indians’s IPL 2025 Season Opener

Where is Hardik Pandya?

Usually, the Mumbai Indians’ CaptainCaptain is the remarkable all-rounder Hardik Pandya. 

But guess what? Hardik will not be on the first IPL 2025 match! He had to miss the first game since the match from last year resulted in punishment.

For What Reason Was Hardik Punished?

Allow me to clarify this. MI against Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) in the last game of IPL 2024. Hardik’s team waited too long to complete their bowling runs. 

The cricket teams have to bowl their overs fast, but MI bowled quite late. Hardik was informed he cannot play in the opening game of this season since it happened three times last season. He also owed INR 30 lakh a fine!

Hardik said he was unaware that bowling slow would result in this penalty. Rules are rules, though, and he now has to miss one game.

Who Is Going to Be CaptainCaptain?

Still, not too concerned about it. The CaptainCaptain for MI’s first game will be the incredibly gifted and entertaining cricket player Suryakumar Yadav (also known as Surya, as supporters call him!). 

Mahela Jayawardene, head coach of MI, broke this news. Since Surya has already captained India’s T20 team, he understands how to lead!

Hardik himself said, “Surya is the perfect choice when I’m not there.”

MI’s First IPL 2025 Match

MI’s first game will be really thrilling! On March 23 they are opposing the formidable team Chennai Super Kings (CSK) at Chennai.

Not all, though; MI will also miss another top player, Jasprit Bumrah, who is still healing from a back ailment. MI supporters will thus have to wait somewhat further to see Hardik and Bumrah perform.

When Will Hardik Return?

You need not worry! Hardik will come back for MI’s second match on March 29. MI will oppose Gujarat Titans (GT) in Ahmedabad.

MI will then play March 31, against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) for their first home game. They then had two more early April games:

• At Lucknow, April 4 against LSG.
• At home, April 7 against Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB).

Regarding MI Last Year

MI failed last year in IPL 2024. They came last and just won 4 out of 14 games. However, they are eager to support Surya in leading the squad in the opening game as they are ready to perform this year!
