How to iron a jacket made of leather and leatherette

Leather and leatherette are plastic materials that are difficult to wrinkle. But there are situations when an item is rolled up and stored for a long time in a folded state. Some people spend too much time wearing leather or faux leather jacket, causing them to wrinkle. It is in such situations that the problem arises: how to smooth a jacket made of leather and leatherette? Let’s consider the options separately and in detail.

How to iron a jacket?

To give a pleasant appearance without wrinkles, there are different solutions that we will consider.

• Dry ironing

A leather product can be ironed, but in order for it to remain wearable, the rules must be followed.

• Set the minimum temperature. If the material does not smooth out, move the arrow to position “2”.
• Do not allow the surface of the iron to come into direct contact with the product.

To do this, choose wrapping paper or thin textiles with a fine structure. The rough structure can be imprinted on delicate skin by the action of hot air and metal.

• Use an iron without a steam function, as steam is not needed in this case. Guide the iron with light pressure.
• View the result. Iron sections separately and move on to the next one as soon as the previous one has cooled completely.

The sleeves should be ironed using a special stand, which comes complete with the main board.

• Use a steamer

Some iron models are equipped with a steam function; use them for your own purpose – smoothing out curls with a thick structure.

Hang the product on a hanger and bring the heated iron to a distance of 10-15 cm. Do not bring it close so that the surface of the device does not touch the product.

Turn on the steam function and process gradually.

Gentle methods

Jackets made from delicate leather are more likely to be susceptible to external influences, so they often require special care. To put it in order and return it to its original appearance, hang the clothes on hangers or a flat back.

The same option can be used to smooth out thick skin, but for this you will have to wait not 2 days, but 7-8 days. These options are good when the bend marks are small. Deep dents will have to be straightened with special means.

Vaseline or castor oil are suitable for this. Due to their oily structure, the substances perfectly soften, straightening clothes. Fatty acids that are good for the skin are found in nut oil. It dries quickly and does not leave a greasy sheen.

Using steam for smoothing

It is known that wrinkled clothes can be smoothed out using steam. It is not necessary to use a steam generator for this. Use available tools.

Fill a basin with boiling water or very hot water. Hang your outerwear on hangers and secure it above the basin. Steam acts on the structure, softening it. To achieve a positive effect faster, close the bath door. This way the steam will take on the desired concentration, and the water will take longer to cool down.

Instead of a container, you can pour water into the bath or turn on the shower at full power. Just make sure that the jacket does not fall into the water and does not get wet, otherwise it can be damaged. The product should be hung for a period of 40 to 70 minutes.

What you need to know about leatherette jackets?

The concept of artificial leather combines several types of materials that are created from polymer threads.

The clothing industry offers the following types of artificial leather:

• Dermantin is a synthetic fabric with nitrocellulose. It is recognized as the cheapest material used to create book bindings, furniture upholstery and sewing inexpensive items. The material is cheap and durable. It is almost impossible to put it in order if folds appear.
• Vinyl or PVC is a popular material among manufacturers. Bags, shoes, raincoats and jackets are made from it.
• Stretch leather is a layer of fabric on which a polymer material is applied. Thanks to the presence of lycra and elastane, the fabric stretches. Therefore, the material is used for sewing shoes and clothes.
• Kirza is a durable material that is resistant to damage. Boots, suitcases and bags are made from it.

Faux leather jacket: ironing correctly

There are several solutions to this problem, and the gentlest one is waiting. Hang the product on hangers and wait until it takes its original shape. The action of its own weight will straighten the jacket and you won’t have to do anything else. But it’s fine if you have time. If it is not there, read the rules that should be followed during dry ironing:

The iron is only suitable for smoothing out creases on faux leather jackets made from cotton or knitwear. These are PVC or leatherette products.

Rule one. Always iron leatherette from the wrong side. Turn the product inside out first so as not to melt the front surface.

Rule two. The temperature should be minimal. In case of direct contact with the iron, the steam function should be turned off.

Rule three. If you use steam, keep the iron at least 15cm away from the pad. Apply steam briefly, take breaks so that the material does not deteriorate. To give the sleeves their original look, use stands.

A folded towel forms a dense cushion, which is convenient for ironing sleeves. Don’t forget to turn your sleeves inside out first.

Smooth without using an iron

You can stretch out folds and dents on a leatherette jacket without an iron. In this case, be sure to turn the product inside out. The sequence of actions is as follows:

• Hang the inverted product on the flat back of a chair or hanger.
• Spray water from a spray bottle over the entire surface of the product. Smooth out the folds with your hands.
• Let the jacket dry. You cannot turn on additional equipment such as a hair dryer or heater. Drying should be done naturally. If the room is warm, the jacket will dry in 24 hours.

Use a mannequin instead of hangers and the back of a chair if you have one. Thanks to the natural shape of the mannequin, the jacket will look normal.
Deep bends and folds are easier to handle if you apply glycerin or water-repellent spray to them. Apply one of the products to the surface of the jacket. They will soften the product and make it pliable.

Traditional methods

Steam is often used to return to its original shape. To do this, just like for a genuine leather jacket, fill a bathtub or plastic bowl with hot water. Hang the item over the container and wait. Steam affects the structure of the fabric, moisturizing it. Steamed and moistened fabric quickly takes the desired shape.

Put on a jacket and go out for a walk in it. Natural dampness affects the skin, returning it to its normal appearance.

Try moistening the product from a spray bottle with a special solution. To do this, dilute liquid conditioner, water and three percent vinegar in equal proportions. Apply the liquid with a spray bottle to problem areas. According to reviews, this method helps to get rid of wrinkled areas in just 4-5 minutes. In this case, the smell of vinegar is not felt, since you are using a weak concentrate.

The jacket is wrinkled: what should you know?

Often, folds on leatherette jackets appear after washing. To prevent this, wash items with a low spin cycle. After washing, hang the clothes on hangers and carefully straighten out the folds. PVC jackets cannot be washed as they shrink.

The lining may cause wrinkles. The lining sometimes shrinks after washing, which leads to additional relief. In this case, smooth the skin by moistening it with a small amount of water.

Some types of leatherette cannot be processed with hot steam. To find out, read the label or instructions first so that caring for your jacket does not cause irreparable consequences.
